September begins our fall sermon series on the 10 Challenges, a fresh look at old laws.
September 1: The Best Advice for a Peaceful Life, with Nancy Cox
We’ve all gone through difficult and trying times. In today’s world, it seems like things are too far beyond our control; “inner peace” is harder to achieve. What are some words of advice you have received that have helped you gain or retain inner peace? COL’s own beloved Nancy Cox delivers messages of peace from across religions.
September 8: Challenge 1. Find Your Personal God
Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” God can be defined differently for everyone. Sometimes maybe a “who,” sometimes a “what.” Is it even important to form an idea? How might it be helpful?
September 15: Challenge 2. Resist Distractions
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.” We don’t worship false idols in this day and age, do we? Of course not – except sometimes, perhaps, money, success, popularity, approval, pleasure, escape. You may have heard it said that “the dose makes the poison.” These things aren’t bad in themselves. Anything in excess – or out of balance – can cloud our judgment and distract us from the journey of becoming our best selves.
September 22: Challenge 3. Remember Who You Are
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.” Words have power. (It hasn’t been too long since we talked about that!) But does God really care if you say a “cuss” word? (Hint: I doubt it) What about when you speak words of judgment, anger, hatred, cruelty, revenge—to yourself or to others? Are you forgetting your true nature? Why does it matter?
September 29: Challenge 4. Give Yourself a Break
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.” Stress is associated with dozens, if not hundreds, of diseases of body and mind. When you begin to feel overwhelmed, ask yourself this: will the world really fall apart if you take a rest?
