“Why Nobody Wants to Go to Church Anymore.”
I recently was introduced to a blog written by Dr. Steve McSwain. It was a 3 part blog entitled “Why Nobody Wants to Go to Church Anymore.” His statistics were eye opening to say the least. One particular stat was that 3 million more previous church goers enter the ranks of the “religiously unaffiliated” each year. To that I say…Yea! My church has been the church of the “none’s” (no religious affiliation) for the past 25 years. I believe I can safely say there is not one member of our congregation that hasn’t run from the religious home of their youth into our open and accepting arms.
Dr. McSwain says phony advertising is one of the reasons for the church’s decline. “You cannot say, everybody is welcome here if, by that, you really mean, so long as you’re like the rest of us, straight and in a traditional family.” Well, we advertise “All are welcome” and we do mean every beautiful soul. I believe a more diverse group would be hard to find, and what would you expect in the world’s most diverse nation!
The truth is, we don’t believe in labels of any kind. Are we Christian? I guess so. Do we believe in God and that power to be all we were created to be is within…Oh, Yes! We choose to live a life of unconditional love—a life that is judgment free.
To be honest, our numbers have dwindled, but not so much for the reasons Dr. McSwain listed. We have long noted that as we grow and develop spiritually to be all God intended and created, there has been a lessening of the need for organized religion. I have also noted there has not been a lessening for the connection between like minded, loving beings. Are our gray haired members in a majority? Well, only because they haven’t found the wonders of Clairol yet.
Dr. McSwain noted change is occurring and we should embrace it. To that I agree whole heartedly. We are evolving and growing so change happens…not accepting that truth is the source of much suffering.
We are the light…the Cathedral of Light. Hugs are waiting.
In love and light,
Rev. Jerri Williams, D.D.
